2015 – Travel Highlights

Image

I can’t believe that 2015 is nearly over! I’ve usually written these highlight posts at the very end of the year, but thought I’d post this a little early for a change since I won’t be traveling anywhere else outside the Northeast Corridor till next year. Here are my travel highlight posts from 20142013 and 2012. Below are some quick stats to provide some perspective on where I went this year:

Cities visited: 28 cities
Countries visited: 6 countries
Miles flown: 105,894 miles
Weekends away from DC: 29
Total miles redeemed: 322,875 miles
Total dollars spent: $11,995

For perspective, this is what all my air travel looked like over the past year:

December:

In December, I took my first road trip with my very own car to Philadelphia. I’m also planning to visit New York one more time this year for Christmas.

How did I afford to do all of this?

A ton of miles redeemed, cheap rent and cheap airfares.

Total Miles Redeemed

I redeemed a total of 322,875 miles this year, spread across the following accounts, for the following trips:

British Airways: 38,500 avios

  • DCA-LGA roundtrip (9,000 miles)
  • LAX-SJC one-way (4,500 miles)
  • SYD-HNL one-way (25,000 miles)

American Airlines: 145,000 AAdvantage miles

  • DCA-OGG (Maui) one-way – 17,500 miles
  • AUH – SYD one-way on Etihad’s First Class Apartments – 60,000 miles
  • NRT – JFK one-way on Japan Airline’s business class – 50,000 miles
  • HNL – JFK one-way on Hawaiian Airlines economy – 17,500 miles

I’ve also already redeemed the following for next year:

  • DCA – CGK (Jakarta) one way on Cathay Pacific First Class – 67,500 miles
  • DCA – BKK (Bangkok) one way on Cathay Pacific Business Class – 55,000 miles

Delta Skymiles: 22,500 Skymiles

  • WAS – OGG one-way on American Airlines economy

United: 42,500 United miles

  • IAD – DXB on United economy – 42,500 miles

Singapore Airlines: 74,375 Singapore Airlines miles

  • LAX – NRT on Singapore Airlines Suites’ Class – 74,375 miles

Total Spent on Travel

As of this writing, according to my Personal Capital account I spent a total of $11,995, or roughly $1,064/month, on travel so far this year. Personal Capital also includes ridesharing and subway expenses, including those that were taken in DC. As a result, I’d suspect that my average travel costs per month are under <$1k/month. A grand a month on travel might seem like a lot to some, but considering I spend only $300/month on rent by living in a living room, the ~$1k extra a month that would’ve otherwise go to pay for rent instead paid for my travels.

What a year of travel has taught me?

Three lessons I’ve learned from a year of travel are:

  • Award points make travel ridiculously accessible. But just because something like travel is accessible and readily feasible, it doesn’t mean I should do it all the time.
  • The world is a whole lot smaller than we truly realize. You can pretty much get to anywhere in the world within 24-48 hours.
  • Travel burnout is real. It’s important to recharge and take a few days (or weekends) off from traveling.

There’s so much more to write, but I’ll save my stories for each of these places in later trip reports. 2015 was an amazing year of travel.

Travel Goals for Next Year:

In the coming year, I’m hoping to do three things:

  • Decrease my travel budget to finally pay off my student loans
  • Do a lot more road trips to explore more of the mid-Atlantic and the Eastern Seaboard.
  • Mitigate travel burnout by limiting the number of times I’m flying, both with domestic and international travel

Here’s looking forward to another year of travel!!

2015 – The Year Ahead

Standard

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this past year’s goal-setting exercise, it’s the importance of approaching goals gradually and consistently by making the work happen automatically. To that end, here are some of my goals for 2015 and the accompanying tasks I’ll have to keep up in order to keep myself in check.

Goal #1: Run a half marathon in under two hours.

System: Run at least 15 miles a week.

So far, I’m planning to run four half-marathons (DC, Seattle and LA Rock N Roll Half Marathons and the Maui Half Marathon) and several DC Area 5k Races. I haven’t fully committed and registered for any races just yet, but I’m looking to register as soon as I get paid later this week!

Goal #2: Have at least 3,000 unique page views in the last thirty days.

System: Draft two blog posts a week. Publish at least one post a week.

After thinking about ways to make blogging more of a consistent habit, I realized I needed to focus on writing about something that I’m truly passionate about. That was easy — travel! I wanted to do something different though, so rather focusing on blogging about my travels, I thought it’d be interesting to blog about exploring the DC through public transportation. You can check out that blog here: DC Metro Trip.

Goal #3: Create a web app for DC Metro Trip

System: Work through the Road to Code Guide. 20 hours per week.

I’ve really REALLY wanted to become more technical. However, I’ve found it absolutely difficult to try to focus on learning to code. This is going to be the year I finally commit and become a front end web developer!

Goal #4: Use my Mandarin Chinese more often.

System: Review my Mandarin Chinese at least 30 minutes a week.

This has been and on-again, off-again goal I’ve had since I graduated college. After studying abroad in both Shanghai and Taipei, as well as majoring in the language during college, I’d hate to think I’d completely lose my ability to use the language due to lack of use. So far, I’ve found a new website, Italki, that lets me connect with professional tutors and language partners to use my Mandarin. Hopefully, this will be just the thing to help me retain my Chinese!

Goal #5: Get my total remaining student loan debt to under $20k.

System: Pay a combined ~$667 per month to my student loans.

Pretty straightforward with this one!

Goal #6: Attend mass at least once a month

System: No associated tasks, other than just showing up!

Same with this one as well, pretty straightforward!

Wish me luck!!

2014 in Review

Standard

Another year has come and gone, which means it’s time for another review. I still can’t believe this is the fourth year I’m doing this. You can find my previous year reviews here: 20132012 and 2011.

What went well?

Traveling

I thought last year was an amazing year of travel, but 2014 was just as amazing! You can find details on my travels this past year here: 2014 Travel Highlights. I went to so many places this year. I’m thankful I had the opportunity to continue to travel, and I hope I have the opportunity to continue to do so in the upcoming year.

Career

When I first quit my job to go traveling in late 2011, I was so excited for what lay ahead of me in terms of all the places I’d get to visit throughout Taiwan! Despite my exuberance, I have to admit that throughout it all, a part of me worried about how taking time off from the workforce would affect my career.

Looking back at it all, I can honestly say that there really wasn’t anything to worry about. 2014 was a fantastic year for my career! Whereas 2012 and 2013 may have been years of career experimentation, I definitely took some strides into finding a career in digital marketing that’s stimulating, challenging, but most importantly: rewarding. Looking forward to another exciting 2015!

Health & Fitness

I had much higher expectations for this past year: being able to complete the minimum requirements for the marine corps physical fitness exam and running a half-marathon in under 2 hours. Although I didn’t meet both of those goals, the decision to work towards those goals helped instill in me the importance of regular physical activity, which I’ve been able to maintain fairly consistently over the past year.

What didn’t go well?

Sticking to my goals

Although I began the year with a enthusiasm to achieve my goals, by the end of it, I had failed to accomplish any of them. I think for this upcoming year, I’ll continue to set goals, but rather than focusing my efforts on the goals themselves, my focus will be on the systems that’ll help me achieve them.

Personal Finances

I’ve definitely made progress on this front, but I’m still disappointed at finding that balance between saving and investing versus spending and enjoying life.

2015 Goals

Pretty simple on this one: more traveling, more running, more writing, improving my Chinese and learning to code. I plan to write about this in more detail in an upcoming post.

2014 – Travel Highlights

Image

**This is going to be a long post.**

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always made traveling a top priority. Traveling is the main reason why, despite my ability to afford more, I prefer to live in a living room where I only pay $350 a month for rent and utilities, which I’ve been doing since August 2012. Below is a simple reminder to myself on why I travel.

2014 TRAVEL EXPENSES

If you’ve made it this far, thank you! Earlier this year, I began tracking how much I’m spending on traveling. The table below includes information for flights, accommodations and transportation. It doesn’t include the cost of activities. Surprisingly, it’s a lot less than I had initially thought. A big part of that is due to the glitch fare I picked up for my trip to Delhi (only $330 for a round trip flight!) and redeeming my frequent flyer points for several trips.
